A MUST-READ Article from Mike Hyatt of Thomas Nelson

There is an article by Mike Hyatt of Thomas Nelson that I read in Carnival of Christian Writers http://ginaconroy.com/groupblog/wordpress/?p=840 this month is a MUST READ. It can speak to you whether you're a writer or not. Very encouraging and thought-provoking.

My favorite two things he said....and which are going to become quotes that I set in front of my computer, are:

Stay humble. "To remain successful, you have to keep adopting the posture of a beginner."
Trust God. "If you don't need God to pull off what you are planning, you are not dreaming big enough."

The rest is great too and better if you read it in context. I think it'll speak to all, challenge all, and encourage all.

Here's the link. You'll find his link once you click this:

http://ginaconroy.com/groupblog/wordpress/?p=840

Once there, just click on Mike Hyatt's link.

STEEPLE HILL MESSAGE BOARD--BABY BLUSH AND CRINGE

ROFL! I just got this (below in bold) comment/e-mail from my friend (Pamela James) who I met years ago on Steeple Hill's Message Boards (called forums now). www.steeplehill.com

For this to make sense, you have to know that when I first stumbled onto those eHarlequin boards I was on bedrest with a pregnancy.

Long ago, when I first met you on the Steeple Hill message boards, I remember this one post where you talked about the baby stepping all over your lover.

I could NOT figure that one out, ROFLOL. Kept me up part of the night too. The next day you came back and lamented the type-o. You'd meant liver.

So now we come full circle! LOL.
Love ya, girl.

If you all haven't visited the Steeple Hill community...what are ya waiting for? You'll laugh and learn and grow to love the people you'll meet over there. Some of them have become some of my best friends...lifetime friends. Readers, writers, pubbed, not pubbed, not looking to be pubbed...doesn't matter. Everyone's welcome.

I'm known as "Squirl" or "Scrollsquirrel" over there. Thank goodness I finally learned how to edit my posts. LOL! Drop by and say hey!

HOW SICK IS THIS?

Got a jury summons today. In the mail. From an actual courthouse. About an actual trial.

In the midst of my family's condolences....I'm secretly about to come unglued inside....

WITH EXCITEMENT!

I've never been summoned for jury duty before!

It is bad that I'm really hoping I'll get picked? I mean, hey..the suspense writer in me's thinkin' Ya know...this could benefit my writing. Could authenticate setting and sensory details if I ever write a scene that is stationed in a courtroom.

Yeah...you're right.

Maybe I need to get out more........

GREAT ARTICLE ON CRAFT: HOOKS AND MORE

Anyone familiar with my writing knows how big I am on hooks. First sentence hooks, chapter hooks, scene hooks...all kinds of hooks. Nearly every reader letter I've had (two a day since November 2007) has mentioned "I couldn't put your book down."

In large part, I think that's God's grace on my writing....gotta give the one credit who most deserves it. That said, I think also part of the reason is that I learned (also by God's grace) how to execute strategically placed lines of text to hook readers and keep them reading.

There is a GREAT article on this, and other aspects of crafting fiction here today on historical author Jennifer Hudson Taylor's blog:

Enjoy!

USING PLOT and CHARACTER-SPECIFIC ANALOGIES

As I'm polishing my contracted novel in preparation to send in, I'm going through the manuscript, making sure that my analogies and metaphors (two rhetorical devices) are plot and character-specific. When I say character-specific, I'm referring largely to the characters' careers, personalities, interests or hobbies that are predominant through the novel.

By definition in Websters:

Metaphor-a figure of speech in which the context demands that a word or phrase not be taken literally, as the sun is smiling; a comparison which doesn't use like or as.

Analogy-connection between things that are otherwise dissimilar;a conclusion or opinion that if two things are alike in some respects they must be alike in others.

So, for instance, if I have a character whose career is a NAVY fighter pilot, he might think or say things like: "Her words jerked him back like the arresting wire on an aircraft carrier." (an arresting wire is the cable thing that catches the jet, acting as a brake).

If I had a character whose career was a nurse, she (or he, since I love to turn stereotypes on their heads) might think or speak or relate to other characters in medical terms. Example: His smile infused her with strength.

Or if I have a character who is a teacher, she might think in teacherly terms.

If the character's favorite pasttime was fishing...(such as Joel's in A Soldier's Promise) he might introspect things like: Bradley's mouth gaped like the nine pound bass Joel hooked yesterday.

If I'd used that analogy...and fishing wasn't a vital part of the plot...it wouldn't make much sense and is a waste. Much better to use plot and character specific analogies.

Remember....the analogies normally use like, but metaphors do not.

Hope this helps.

Have fun analogizing!

LOSS OF A PHENOMENAL WRITER DAWN THOMPSON

I just heard sad news that author Dawn Thompson passed away this week. I knew she was in and out of the hospital and ICU..but hadn't heard she'd died not quite a week ago.

My condolences to her family, friends and chapter mates.

I don't know where Dawn stood with God when she died...I hope she was at peace and is in Heaven with Him and free of pain and suffering this moment.

I do know she was an absolutely phenomenal writer who gave and gave and gave to the writing community...vast resources of her time and expertise to other authors.

I will sadly miss her amazing voice and her great gift of story.

BORROWED PRAYERS-for those serving and their families

I am reinstating my borrowed prayers on my blog, starting today. It's just a prayer you can borrow and pray if you so choose or if something in the prayer speaks to you.

God hears. God cares.

One thing I ask you to do is (no matter what your view of war is) pray for the soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan and otherwise deployed, and their families. Just in the past two weeks, I have received several reader letters requesting prayer for a serviceman (or woman) who has been wounded in action.

One reader's son-in-law gave his hand for freedom...please pray for him and his newlywed wife. No need for names...God knows who this young man is. He's had several surgeries...so please pray he's able to function.

Another boy from Cody...his entire company was killed by a roadside bomb and he is in critical condition. Improved from grave I think...so there is hope for this boy. PLEASE keep him and his family in your prayers.

BORROWED PRAYER
God, watch over those serving, and their families. Protect them, help the roadside bombs to be detected before they can detonate. Please help boost the morale of the soldiers and help people know how to reach out to them and their families. The best gift we can give each other is prayer. Lead us in what to pray for our nations, God. In a sense, your son died for freedom too...so we could be free from being seperated from you forever in eternity. Thank you that He's risen and reigns over death. Thank you for being a God of mercy and love. But also a God who will stand up and fight for the oppressed, which is what we're doing in Iraq. Because it could easily be our country. We are blessed to have been born in the US, Lord...but that was by your choosing. Help us never take our freedom for granted. Show yourself, Lord to those serving and their families. Be real to them. Magnify yourself. Give the families of those who've given limbs and life for freedom everything they need. Be their comfort and their strong tower and their Refuge and their hope. Help people to be obedient, look past themselves and reach out. In Jesus' name. Amen.

JUGS, HUGS and A SAGGING BLUSH and CRINGE

I was sending an e-mail to a contest entrant, letting them know they were officially entered.

Problem was...I typed so fast then hit send without proofreading...and of course noticed as it sent that I'd accidentally hit a "j" where there needed to be an "h"...

so the e-mail went like this:

You're officially in!

Jugs,

Cheryl

Okay...for that to be really funny...you'd have to know the day I had yesterday (my birthday) when I was lamenting (allll day) the facts that (1) I thought for an entire year I was 37 when really I was 38-turning-39. And (2) gravity has won the battle....not quite to the point that I look like I have two sets of arms instead of one...but still. 'Nuff said.

Hugs (not Jugs)

Cheryl-a casualty of gravity.

ROFL BLUSH AND CRINGE

One of my Seeker Sistas Seekerville was trying to visit my blog....which she knows is named "Squirrel's Treehouse." She didn't know my exact blog address...which is

http://scrollsquirrel.blogspot.com/

scrollsquirrel.blogspot.com

Problem was...she couldn't remember my URL...so she just typed in "Squirrels Treehouse" which took her (WHOOPSIE!) here.....

MOST DEFINITELY NOT MY BLOG which is called squirrelstreehouse.blogspot.com

For those of you who've made this mistake before.....I ASSURE you.....I am NOT moonlighting as a phone pimp. Furthermore, I wouldn't know how to be a bad a** DJ if my life depended on it. I'd get so nervous in front of the mic all you'd hear would be giggling...which is what I do when nervous which just so happens to happen at times you're NOT supposed to be laughing.

Oh man....I'm rolling over here...what a shock to those of you who thought you were going to an Inspirational author's blog. TOO FUNNY!

The other reason I'm laughing is because I'm trying to imagine who would be more shocked...the people trying to get to the OTHER Squirrel's Treehouse....and stumbled onto my nicey-nicey Christian one...or those trying to get to mine who stumbled onto the DJ pimp one. I'm wondering...what IS a phone pimp? Meaning what do phone pimps pimp? Phones? I probaby don't want to know do I?

Okay, lastly the totally weird thing is I sort of got immersed into reading the other treehouse blog....and figured out that, sadly, the other Squirrel has the same deviant sense of humor that I do. Must run in the rodent family. Anyway, I decided the blog would be a great character study in modern guy dialogue. And lady authors, if you want to learn how to better write from a guy's Point of View...this other Treehouse would be a good study.

Cheryl Wyatt...the other Squirrel who promises she is not moonlighting as a DJ/phone pimp.

INTERVIEW WITH MISSY TIPPENS and GIVEAWAY!

Hello all!

I am so pleased to introduce you to my Seeker Sister SEEKER BLOG friend and fellow Love Inspired author Missy Tippens!!'

----

GIVEAWAY!

Missy is donating an autographed copy of her debut novel "Her Unlikely Family" so be sure to leave a comment, asking to be entered in the drawing for a chance to win her book.

I will draw a winner one week from today.

If you don't happen to win, this book is well-worth the price and can be purchased on www.eharlequin.com or www.steeplehill.com or www.amazon.com or any other online bookseller.

----

MY REVIEW:

Missy's debut novel is FABULOUS! The characters were polar opposites yet so well-matched. I loved the quaint, endearing setting in this story. Missy writes in such a way that I was rooted in the scene and felt like I was there with the characters. I eagerly await her next book!

----

Missy's BIO:

Born and raised in Kentucky, Missy met her very own hero when she headed off to grad school in Atlanta, Georgia. She promptly fell in love and hasn’t left Georgia since. She and her pastor husband have been married 20-plus years now, and have been blessed with three wonderful children along with an assortment of pets.

In L.B.C. (Life Before Children), Missy worked as a clinical microbiologist. Once she had her first baby, she retired to become a stay-at-home mom. She’s grateful to God that she was able to do that for 16 years and had the opportunity to pursue her writing during that time. Nowadays, in addition to her writing, she teaches as an adjunct instructor at a local technical college.

Missy is an award-winning writer and was a finalist in Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart Contest. After ten years of pursuing her dream, she made her first sale of a full-length novel to Steeple Hill Love Inspired. She still pinches herself to see if it really happened! Her debut novel, Her Unlikely Family, will be released in February 2008.

----
And now...presenting an exclusive interview with the author:

CONGRATS on your debut novel, Missy! What was the funnest scene to write in Her Unlikely Family?

Well, the putt-putt golf scene was really fun. I loved tormenting Michael (the hero). But I guess my favorite scene to write of any book is the happy ending. I love to write an ending with an emotional punch. I usually cry while I’m writing it! Which doesn’t sound fun, does it? LOL But I do enjoy it.

Missy, you are part of a local writers' group. How important do you think writers' groups, whether that be online or face to face, are for serious writers?

I belong to several online groups and two local groups. And I can’t imagine life without them! It would be so lonely. Plus, I’ve learned a ton about the business from my local RWA chapter, Georgia Romance Writers. In addition to that networking, though, are the personal friendships. Friendships that have lasted over years. Some of those friends are just as important to me as friends here in my town. We just don’t get to spend time together face to face.

Also, do you think it helped you in your journey to publication? If so, how so?

I credit contests and conferences with helping me get published, and I wouldn’t have had those opportunities without the groups I belong to. So thank you to all those who’ve judged my manuscripts and who’ve introduced me to their editors and agents!

If your heroine from Her Unlikely Family could give a one paragraph blurb about you, the author who fashioned her, what would she say?

Oh my! What a great, unique question. J Hmmm…

Josie speaking: Missy Tippens is a busy wife, mom, teacher and writer. She loves God, loves people, loves her church, loves to sing in the choir and play handbells, loves to hang out with friends, loves to laugh with her husband and children, and loves to hold a good book in her hands to escape all the busyness for a while. She’s also blessed by being able to create worlds in her head and to put those stories on paper.

What about the hero?

Josie speaking: He’s so uptight, so bankerly, but I kind of like him anyway. He’s a great guy, and a great uncle. And I bet he’d make a great husband someday. If we can get to our happy ending. (You’ve gotta read to find out whether or not we do!) ;)

What about the teen in your book?

Josie speaking: Lisa is so like me, a little lost soul trying to please everyone, yet wanting to be loved for who she really is. She needs some unconditional love and acceptance, and she’ll be fine. If I could just teach her uncle to do that!

What about the cat?

Josie speaking: Achoo!! That little allergenic monster! I wish Lisa would keep the thing outside, but I can’t bear to fuss at her about it. She’s gotten so attached to him.

What do you have in the works? And how can readers visit you online?

I’m working on a new story right now. I’m about halfway through a re-write. I’m hoping it’ll be the start of a series about a small Georgia town I’ve created. I’ll just have to wait and see!

I love to hear from readers! Please visit www.missytippens.com or email me at missytippens@aol.com.

Thanks, Cheryl! This has been fun.

Missy..I've had a blast too! Thanks so much for being with us today. Bloggers, don't forget to help get the word out about Missy's book. And if you haven't already, sign up for the drawing by leaving your name in the comments and your e-mail address so you can be reached if you win. It's best to leave spaces in your address so internet spiders don't phish your addy. Thanks for dropping by!

CALL FOR MARCH BLOG TOUR PARTICIPANTS

Hey all!

Time once again to gear up for my March blog tour for A Soldier's Family. This is the next book in my Wings of Refuge series from Steeple Hill, and like book one, it also received a Top Pick from Romantic Times.

WOOT GOD!!!

Anyway, for my second book, I'm scaling down the tour and will probably just have blog tour participants do a review and host a drawing. (I will provide and mail the books to winners once you draw them. I'll just need you to obtain their names and addresses after you pick your winners.)

If you have more than one blog...I will provide one book per blog if you want.

So if you're interested in participating in the March tour, please e-mail me asap at anavim4him @ Gmail. com (close spaces) and put "March Blog Tour" in the e-mail header. That, or leave a comment on this post, with your e-mail address (leave spaces in it so spiders don't getcha) letting me know.

Thanks to everyone for making my January tour a success!

When you e-mail me....be sure to include your mailing address so I can get your book to you this week so you'll have time to read it for review. I'll also need which date you want in March. I'd prefer to have most of them done the first half of the month so we can announce it on the ACFW book club loop.

I am willing to do interviews or guestblogs if you provide the questions and a subject that you'd like me to guestblog about.

Thanks all!

Newsletter sign up is easy. Visit www.CherylWyatt.com and enter your e-mail address in the space that says, "Join Cheryl Wyatt's Author Mailing List"

The main prize is your choice between an 8 GB iPod Nano, an AlphaSmart Neo (www.alphasmart.com) or a six-month subscription to any Steeple Hill line of your choice. www.steeplehill.com

---"Hold On" Worship CD which features skydivers in formation on the cover
---Free, autographed copies of (my debut novel) A Soldier's Promise...book one in Wings of Refuge which is a Top Pick from Romantic Times.
---128mb flash drive
---$10.00 certificates to Barnes and Noble

Be sure to put "CONTEST" in the header. Deadline entry is Midnight, Central Standard Time the night of February 14, 2008.

I will draw winners' names February 15, 2008 and notify them that week, so be sure to leave a valid e-mail address when you sign up.

Also, for every person you send to sign up for my newsletter, you will receive another entry in the hat. So be sure to tell them to mention who sent them to sign up. They may also enter the contest if they sign up in time.

For the release of my March book, (A Soldier's Family—also a RT Top Pick--available on pre-order now), I will be giving away more great prizes, but remember, only my newsletter subscribers will be eligible for entry, so stay tuned.

Marketing Idea: Story-Specific Gifts

I'm holding a huge contest (still a few days to enter) for my newsletter subscribers. One of the things I'm giving away is 50 copies of the CD "HOLD ON by Vineyard Worship."

Why would I include this in the giveaway to celebrate my debut novel?

Because my debut novel is book on in a series about US Air Force Pararescue Jumpers (PJs)...who are Special Operations skydiving paramedics trained in combat, search and rescue.

The cover of the CD (pictured above) features skydivers in mid-air formation.

This is one idea of creative ways to market yourself.

I'm including the CD which will appeal to readers since I'm also giving away flashdrives...which will likely appeal to writers.

I want the giveaway to be appealing to both.

There's still time to sign up for the January contest...

Visit my Web site www.CherylWyatt.com and enter your e-mail address in the line that says "Join Cheryl Wyatt's Author Mailing List"

Warmly,

Cheryl

HELP VETERANS

Many of you know I write military fiction.....part of the reason is because I have a heart to honor those who serve and their families. So I like to help get the word out about certain places or organizations that provide support for military folks and their families.

Check these out. It's easy to help service members and their families. Hope you'll consider one of these options to show support to our troops and veterans:

Marketing Tip of the Day: Hire a Dog

Just got an e-mail from a friend and reader who said she had to go purchase another copy of my book (A Soldier's Promise) because she was nearly through with it....had to leave for something...came back and her puppy had chewed it up. She couldn't stand not finishing the book so she ran out and bought another one. LOLOL!

I want to get a copy of that dog. LOL!

CONGRATS JANUARY PROMPT WINNER

Huge congrats going out to Cheryl Shaw who took first place in my January Prompt Contest. Cheryl won a copy of Picket Fence Promises, a March Steeple Hill Cafe release by Kathryn Springer.

WAY TO GO, CHERYL!

Thanks to all who entered January's prompt. Competition was ultra-tough and I loved every entry that came in.

If you're a beginning writer....don't be afraid to enter. I don't choose on merit of how good craft is..but mostly on how well the story sticks with me and how well I like the characters.

Okay writers.......February prompt was posted a few days ago....I'm looking forward to your entries.
