Techy Blush and Cringe

Let me begin by saying that I am technologically challenged. I even have trouble spelling that word. Spellchecker almost ALWAYS has to fix it for me.

Anyway...today I put a worship CD in my computer because someone in my house who will remain nameless keeps "borrowing" my CD player for the studio and forgets to bring it back.

So, I've been missing listening to worship and tuning in while I write. So I thought I'd see if the music CD plays in my computer's CD drive.

Don't laugh. I seriously had no idea if it would work or not.

Anyway...it did, but not until after I pushed a bunch of buttons. No idea how I got it to work but it did. So the music starts. The CD is Hold On (picture above) and one I've been using as a giveaway along with my Wings of Refuge books since the books are about military skydivers. And I have this bluish-silver theme going on with my promo stuff. I like stuff to match. Dunno why. It's the OCD rearing it's organizational head I guess.

The CD was made in New Zealand by the way. Not in Oregon or Fort Wayne. Trust me. This will be important later.

Anyway...all of a sudden..the NEATEST thing happened! (snickering as I type this) This slideshow of pictures started fading in and out on my screensaver to the tune of the music! I was SO impressed that not only will my computer PLAY MUSIC, the CD has pictures to go along with the music!

Then the weirdest thing happened...a picture of a little girl with a teddy bear came across the screen. Huh. That looks familiar. Looks like the picture I turned in to my editor for my last Art Fact Sheet. That picture fades out.

Next picture fades in...huh. Now that is really strange. It's a picture of a PJ (pararescue jumper) which I used to help me be able to describe a rescue using a hoist extraction. Very weird that the CD would have THESE pictures on it.

Then...Chip MacGregor's smiling face fills my entire computer screen. Now I'm really perplexed because I cannot figure out how Literary Agent Chip MacGregor, being Scottish, would be on a New Zealand Vineyard worship CD. And I am not exaggerating when I tell you I spent at least a minute trying to figure that out and make the mental connection between Scotland and New Zealand.

I know. Duh.

The stupid program was doing a slideshow of pictures I had on my computer!!! Not pictures on the music CD. Duh. Duh. Duh. LOL!

And in case you're wondering why I had a picture of Chipster on my puter..well that's because I interviewed him for the Seeker loop recently. www.seekerville.blogspot.com

Okay..go ahead and ask....and yes, I had a total blonde moment.

But it's too funny (to me at least) not to share.

GACK! FLIPPER FLOPPER

Oh man. I've chewed my nails to nubs.

You know how I have this problem with NOT being able to see errors on a computer screen?

Well, that's why I always print out my submissions on hard copy. I can usually always catch errors on paper that I can't catch by proofreading by computer monitor.

Well, I have something I just submitted to my editor and to a prospective agent.

Only, because I was on jury duty for a criminal case, I wasn't allowed online. They wouldn't let me have my computer so I couldn't print out the mss to proofread it. My husband printed it and took it to the mail box for me.

Of course..my friend Camy, who checks all my stuff to be sure it's structurally sound, asks..."why do you have the guy geared up in scuba gear and carrying two roaring twenties dancers during a water rescue?"

Um.

Gulp.

"Huh? Roaring twenties...what?"

So, on pins and needles, I yanked the laptop out and pulled open the file...

And the needles turned to knives!

I DID do a spellcheck! I really, really did.

Oh man...I used the word "flappers" when I MEANT "flippers".

Ugh. And I didn't catch it before I mailed it out!

So unfortunately, the text, which could at any moment be gracing the eyes of my editor and a prospective agent...will read:

Snaps sounded as Vince adjusted his facemask. “I’ll meet up with you guys later. Beep if you need me before then.” Scuba gear donned, and sleek black flappers carried under each armpit, Vince tanked toward the water.

OOOOPS.

Lord, I pray they know what I meant to mean. EEEK. Maybe if that's the only mistake, mercy will triumph over judgement. LOL!

At least I fixed the memories. Remember that blog post? Where the stupid Spell Check changed the text TO "Mammories assaulted Nolan as he strode across the bridge toward her." When it was SUPPOSED to say, "Memories assaulted Nolan as he strode across the bridge toward her." Only I guess I stuck an "a" in memories by mistake.

That's THIS SAME STORY! Which I see is trying to be a royal thorn in my side...

Anyway..speaking of stories....

The moral of this blog story is....NEVER totally rely on your SpellChecker. ALWAYS go over it with human eyes...and a couple fresh sets of human eyes. Eyes that will pick out wrong word usage. Not misspellings.

Egads.

Too embarrassed to sign my name here.

Okay..check it!

Okay...since posting that last blog...several of my friends have directed me to some stellar reviews of my book. What would I do without good friends to give me a boost when I most need it? LOL!

Here's one...check it out.

I LOVE her pink camo blog!!!!

Cheryl

I knew it was coming...

Wow, let me just preface this by saying that I'm not looking for compliments here. I'm just posting from a very raw moment in that I just received my first very public, very scathing review.

I knew it was coming.

No author can escape it.

Did I fall apart? Nope.

Did I quit writing? You're reading this aren't ya? ;-)

Did it sting? Very much.

At first.

BUT...I knew going into this that I wouldn't please every single person in the world. LOL!

Sure, a terrible feeling of dread came over me as I read the review. But then I felt God ask me some things:

"Did you write that book as worship?"
--"Yes, Lord."

"Do you think that pleased me?
--"Yes, Lord."

"Then why the sad face?"
--"Well, because I didn't want to let my editors down or embarrass them or my family by bad reviews."

"Did your editors publish the book in the first place?"
--"Yes, Lord."

"Don't you think that means they believe in you and in that book?"
--"Yes, Lord."

"Didn't I hear you telling another writer this week that 'you'll never be able to please every reader...so don't even try? And just be faithful to your core readership.'"
--Laughing now. "Yes, Lord. Yes. I get it."

"Do you know I'm your biggest fan?"
Gulp. One tear. Then another. Then another.
--"Please bless that person who gave me the bad review, and I mean this in Jesus' name."

And I REALLY did mean that prayer. The fact that my desire to WANT to pray blessings over that person eventually (I SAID EVENTUALLY!!! LOL!) won out over my urge to pray for their computer to explode is the true miracle. That God has my heart. As ugly and as nasty as I can be sometimes (Yes! Me, really!)...yet He's still faithful. Still loves me. Love always wins out. Always.

Guess that's why I'm so driven to write romance.

I KNOW the author of love. I KNOW Love, Himself.

I KNOW HIM! AND His lovingkindness!

To God:
I KNOW You. God Almighty who made me and gave me this gift and knew this review was coming before I did. Thank You for encouraging me. Thank You for giving me the grace to handle both praise for the talent You've given me, and thank you for giving me the grace to handle the criticism of my work. Help me always be humble...on both ends of that.

I have nothing to boast about, Lord except that I know You.

If I know my writing means something to You, then that's what really matters.

Yes, as my husband says, "Everyone is entitled to their opinion. A review is just the opinion of one person."

But...oh how much better it feels when that one person LOVES my stuff. LOL!

Thank You also, Lord for the gift of humor and for helping me be able to laugh at myself and at stings life hurls at me.

Cheryl...who is glad she got that (first bad review) out of the way. SHEW!

PS:

By the way...it wasn't a reviewer. It was a reader who heard great buzz about the book but was sorely disappointed. The person did say they are gonna try my second book. EEEK. I almost wish they wouldn't. LOL! And I do kinda feel bad they spent money on the book only to feel it wasted. That's no fun.

Anyway, I do feel a sense of relief. I wonder if the next negative review will be easier to take? LOL!

Thus says the LORD, "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things," declares the LORD. ONLY UNI BLOG TOUR and DOUBLE DRAWING!

Hey all! I am as pleased as winter snap peas dipped in Wasabi to introduce my good friend and FABU author Camy Tang...and an interview with grandma Sakai from Camy's Sushi Series!

Everything you always wanted to know about an Asian grandma but were afraid to ask

Camy: Today we’re interviewing Chieko Sakai, who has starred in two of my books, SUSHI FOR ONE and ONLY UNI. Readers probably know her as Grandma Sakai. How are you today, Grandma?

Grandma Sakai: Fine, thank you. I appreciate you having me here today.

Camy: Anytime, Grandma. Now, our readers want to know how you feel about Lex’s new boyfriend Aiden.

Grandma Sakai: I’m very happy for Lex. Aiden is a nice boy. Steady job, good income.

Camy: How about the fact he’s not Asian?

Grandma Sakai: I am perfectly happy with her choice of significant other, regardless of ethnicity. Although I don’t quite understand why she couldn’t be happy with a nice Japanese boy.

Camy: How are things with you and Trish?

Grandma Sakai: Things are perfectly fine.

Camy: Uh ... they are?

Grandma Sakai: Of course. Trish is my favorite granddaughter.

Camy: Didn’t you tell that to Mimi at the last family gather—

Grandma Sakai: Trish is the only granddaughter who speaks Japanese. I’m very proud of her initiative to keep in touch with her heritage.

Camy: She doesn’t seem to like one particular Japanese boy too much. Not that in touch with her heritage, is she?

Grandma Sakai: She just needs to understand how perfect Kazuo is for her, that’s all. She’ll realize it eventually. Trish is a smart girl.

Camy: What if she doesn’t come around?

Grandma Sakai: (Huffily) Trish has always understood what’s expected of her from her family. She wouldn’t want to disappoint Grandma, now would she? Grandma’s good opinion is very important to her.

Camy: Grandma, you’re talking in third person again—

Grandma Sakai: Grandma would be extremely irritated if she didn’t oblige her family with a good match to a good Japanese boy like Kazuo.

Camy: But what if Trish doesn’t want—

Grandma Sakai: In fact, Grandma might resort to other measures if Trish did something to displease Grandma.

Camy: Hooboy, interview’s over. Thanks for being here, Grandma. (hissing) (You’re doing an interview! You can’t make threats on a blog!)

Grandma Sakai: (Well, you started it. If you’d just write the book differently—)

Camy: (We’ll discuss this later.) Thanks for having us here, Cheryl!

Camy Tang is the loud Asian chick who writes loud Asian chick lit. She used to be a biologist, but now she is a staff worker for her church youth group and leads a worship team for Sunday service. She also runs the Story Sensei fiction critique service. On her blog, she gives away Christian novels every Monday and Thursday, and she ponders frivolous things like dumb dogs (namely, hers), coffee-geek husbands (no resemblance to her own...), the writing journey, Asiana, and anything else that comes to mind. Visit her website at http://www.camytang.com/ for a huge website contest going on right now, giving away five boxes of books and 25 copies of her latest release, ONLY UNI.

AND....here on my blog...we're giving away TWO more copies of ONLY UNI!

Leave a comment with a valid e-mail address before April 1st so I can contact you if you win. Remember to leave spaces in it so the spiders don't phish your addy.

About that Jupiter thang...

This story is so cute I had to share. My middle child (Codename "Eno") snuggled in beside me today. Tears filled Eno's eyes and she said, "Mom, I love Jesus with all my heart. I love Jesus SO much that I would love Him even if I was poor and didn't have a thang. In fact, I love Jesus more than anythang in the entire world. I even love Him more than all the world. And even if there was no world to love and I was floating around in space even as far as by Jupiter...I'd still love Him more than anythang."

Thank you, Jesus, for wooing this child's heart to yourself. I know You love the songs she makes up for You every single day. I know You hear. And You've answered prayers I prayed over her when she was growing in my womb. That she would know you and love You more than anything.

Thank you. And about that Jupiter "thang"....I love you more than anything too.

Eno's very proud mommy.

I'M IN THE POLLS!

ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) has a book club and they feature one or two books a month. This month they're featuring Steeple Hill books and Heartsong Presents books...one of each.

My book was chosen as one of the nominees!

I hope you will go and cast your vote. You have to join the book club in order to vote (it's free to join ACFW's Book club) and there are some great books up this month, including A Love Inspired Historical by Ruth Axtell Morren and Missy Tippens' debut novel Her Unlikely Family from Steeple Hill Love Inspired.

The very awesome thing is there are FOUR debut novelists competing in the polls this month. The two Heartsong Presents books up are debut novels as well. (Tiff Miller and Beth Goddard...who sold her first book right around the time I did)

That speaks highly of ACFW and how they serve to grow authors.

There's also the opportunity to chat with an author once a month.

Even if you don't vote for me, I hope you'll check out the book club and join it if it interests you.
